Contemporary Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

The second edition of Contemporary Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is newly formatted and presents a substantial expansion in the number of diseases. During the intervening years since the publication of the first edition, the knowledge base and concepts of many entities have undergone significant changes, particularly in the realm of the infectious, immunologic, and blood diseases. Many new medications have evolved and have been integrated into the treatment sections of the applicable diseases.
The second edition continues to retain the primary focus of being a concise, user-friendly resource for those wishing to acquire a solid working knowledge of the oral diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions.
Providing essential information in a compact and lightweight book rather than in a reference resource for all diseases occurring in the anatomic area continues to be its highest priority. Thus deciding which disease entities not to include continued to be a challenge. Decisions to exclude specific diseases were basically made on their incidence of occurrence in the Western world. The new two-column format allows for a sizeable increase in the size and number of illustrations, substantially enhancing the atlas and diagrammatic component of the text. Most of the diagrammatic illustrations have been redrawn with an added dimension of professionalism. The sections devoted to the embryonic, molecular, and genetic sciences basic to groups of disease processes have been extended and updated. The inclusion of this content is based on the belief that understanding the biologic basis of disease increases the clinician’s diagnostic acumen when patients present features of diseases that differ from the classic norm. Free, universal Internet access to worldwide medical literature has reduced the usefulness of extensive citations in the Additional Readings sections after each chapter.

  • All topics have been completely revised and updated with the latest information on the etiology, clinical features, histopathology, treatment, and prognosis of each disease.

  • An all new format with larger illustrations and additional syndromes and hereditary diseases, includes more than 900 images (nearly 700 in full color), larger size to show even more detail, and striking new full-color line drawings to assist with the clear identification and diagnosis of oral conditions.

  • New disease entities have been added ― including skin lesions, additional immune-mediated conditions, recent advances in the understanding and management of AIDS, and expanded information on the treatment and management of oral diseases ― to keep readers up to date on the most recent trends and findings in oral diagnosis and the treatment of disease.

  • A comprehensive glossary at the end of the book makes it easy to quickly locate definitions of every key term highlighted within the text.
